CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

“Stuart, long time no speak! How’s it going in your fancypants complex murders unit, or whatever you call it?”

“Complex Crimes Unit. And if you saw this office you’d take back that ‘fancypants’ on the spot.”

“Yeah, whatever. What can I do for you?”

“Who says I need something?”

“Stu. I’ve known you since you and me were at training college. You don’t call me at quarter to five on a Wednesday afternoon unless you need something for a case.”

Stuart smiled. Kate Williams was a pal from way back when he’d started on the force. The two of them had briefly dated, but not for long enough that it had ruined their friendship. Now she was a DS in the Organised Crime division. Kate was hard-working and intelligent and had thoroughly deserved her promotion, but that didn’t mean it didn’t rankle from time to time.

“OK, you’re right. Have you heard of the Steve Severini case?”

“Stu, what do you take me for? Some kind of troglodyte who’s been stuck under the proverbial rock for the last year? Of course I’ve heard of the bloody Severini case. Your new boss was SIO, yeah?”

“She was.” Kate knew more about his new posting than he’d realised. “So it’s come up in conjunction with another investigation we’re working on.”

“Phineas Montague.”

“Kate, how is it that you know everything about my new job?”

“I’m tracking you, Stu. Didn’t you know? That’s what us OC types do these days.”

He laughed.

“Nah, you numbskull,” she continued. “Your new posting has got tongues wagging here. We all want to know where your fancy new office is.”

Stuart looked up. Across the desks, Patty was peering into her screen. Further away were empty desks with junk piled up on them, the three offices that were in use, and the fourth one that was looking increasingly like the back room of an understaffed charity shop. “It’s a long way off being fancy, Kate.”

“Yeah, yeah. I believe you. So DI Tanner thinks the two cases are linked? Multi-millionaires and that?”

Stuart pursed his lips. He wasn’t sure how much he was supposed to be telling colleagues outside the unit.

“Something like that,” he said. “But what I’m more interested to know is whether either Severini or Montague’s names have ever come up in an OC investigation.”

“You want to know if Organised Crime are tracking them too, just like I’m tracking you?”

“If you are, I hope you’re doing a better job of it than you are with me. Given that you don’t know the first thing about the office I’m working out of.”

A laugh. “Your boss checked Severini out for OC links when she was heading up that case first time round.”

“The case was never formally closed, so I wouldn’t exactly use the phrase ‘first time round’.”

“You know what I mean. Anyway, we checked him out on the system. Even… well, you don’t need to know what else we did. But he was clean. No organised crime connections at all. Some kind of miracle, for a guy like him.”

“What about Phineas Montague?”

“Well, that’s new, so I can’t say for sure.
